Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey has disclosed that the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection intervened in the case of a woman who was allegedly assaulted by her husband, providing protection and support as the legal process continues.

She explained that the woman was initially placed in a shelter, where she received psychosocial support and other essential assistance to help her recover from the experience.

“Our immediate priority was to ensure her safety and provide the necessary support while the legal process was ongoing,” Dr. Lartey said.

According to her, the Ministry also collaborated with the Ghana Police Service to rescue and reunite the woman with her children.

“We worked closely with the police to ensure that her children were safely rescued and reunited with their mother. We believe that family support is critical to the recovery and wellbeing of survivors,” she stated.

Dr. Lartey further revealed that the woman has since been reintegrated into society and supported with vocational training to help her gain economic independence.

“We did not want to provide only temporary relief. Our objective was to equip her with the skills and support necessary to become economically independent and provide for herself and her children,” she added.

She stressed the importance of providing comprehensive support to survivors of domestic violence, noting that protection, psychosocial assistance and economic empowerment are essential components of the recovery process.

“Survivors need more than protection from immediate harm. They also need the opportunity to rebuild their lives, regain their confidence and become self-reliant,” Dr. Lartey said.
