The Minority Caucus in Parliament has called for the immediate arrest of individuals involved in what it describes as the unlawful closure of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) office in Tema Central, warning that the incident threatens public order and disrupts access to essential healthcare services.

In a press statement issued on February 12, 2026, the caucus expressed “grave concern” over reports that certain unnamed political party executives locked up the facility.

They described the action as a direct interference with a public institution and an obstruction of services meant for vulnerable citizens.

According to the Alexander Afenyo-Markin-led Minority, no political grievance justifies shutting down a national health service office.

They stressed that the NHIS exists to serve the public and should not be used for partisan disputes.

The group urged law enforcement agencies to act swiftly, demanding the “immediate arrest of all persons directly involved” and their prosecution in accordance with Ghana’s laws.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) side cautioned that any failure to enforce the law could set a dangerous precedent by allowing political actors to obstruct state institutions without consequences, thereby weakening public confidence in governance.

The statement further emphasised that healthcare delivery must not be disrupted for political leverage, noting that citizens seeking NHIS registration, renewals and claims processing should not suffer due to internal disagreements.

The Minority also called for the swift reopening of the Tema Central office and the immediate restoration of full services, insisting that accountability must be “immediate and visible”.
