GES condemns shooting incident at Garu District Assembly Primary and JHS
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed deep regret and condemnation over a shooting incident that occurred on Monday, October 20, 2025, at Garu D/A Primary and Junior High School.
The tragic event led to the death of the school's Headteacher, Mr. Bukhari Yahaya.
In a statement released on October 22, 2025, by Daniel Feyi, Head of Public Relations at GES, the management strongly denounced the "cruel and needless act of violence," emphasising that schools must remain safe spaces for teaching and learning.
"Such acts have no place in our educational system and will not be tolerated," the statement read.
GES extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, particularly the bereaved family of Mr. Yahaya, as well as to the staff and students of Garu D/A Primary and JHS.
The service expressed solidarity with the entire Garu education community during this difficult time.
As part of immediate measures to address the trauma caused by the incident, the school has been temporarily closed from Tuesday, October 21 to Monday, October 27, 2025.
The Guidance and Counselling Unit of the District will provide psychosocial support to students and teachers to help them recover from the trauma.
GES is collaborating with the District Security Council (DISEC) and security agencies to ensure safety as investigations into the incident continue.
The public in Garu is encouraged to remain calm and support efforts to restore peace to the school environment.
