PSWU demands consultation on PURC–Energy Commission merger plan
The Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) Ghana has requested an engagement with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transportation on the proposed merger between the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) and the Energy Commission.
In a letter dated October 22, 2025, and signed by Mr. Bernard Adjei, General Secretary of the Union, the PSWU expressed the need for dialogue to address concerns raised by staff of both commissions, who are members of the Union.
According to the letter, the request stems from anxieties among workers regarding the potential implications of the merger on their employment and conditions of service.
The Union also noted that there are fears the process could be concluded without adequate consultation or consideration of critical issues affecting staff.
“The Union is of the opinion that, since this proposal has major repercussions on staff matters, an engagement will enable us to better understand the proposal, make meaningful inputs, and explore more workable options,” the letter stated.
The PSWU emphasised that it represents employees across 75 public sector organisations, including PURC, the Energy Commission, VRA, NEDCo, GRIDCo, and the Bui Power Authority.
While anticipating a favourable response from the Ministry for an engagement at the earliest possible time, the Union extended its assurance of utmost respect to the Minister and the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
