GRASAG backs Rent Control action over hostel price hikes, urges government intervention
The Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG) has expressed support for recent actions taken by the Rent Control Department over increasing hostel and accommodation prices in tertiary institution communities across Ghana.
In a press statement issued on May 8, 2026, the association described the continuous rise in hostel fees as a major challenge affecting students, particularly graduate students.
According to GRASAG, accommodation costs have become one of the biggest financial burdens on students, many of whom are already dealing with high tuition fees, research expenses, transportation costs and the rising cost of living.
The association said some students are forced to spend significant portions of their resources on accommodation while receiving poor living conditions in return.
GRASAG also commended the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) for drawing national attention to what it described as years of exploitation within the student accommodation sector.
The association further praised the Rent Control Department for responding to the concerns and pledged its support in efforts to protect students from unfair pricing practices.
GRASAG has therefore called on the Ministry of Education to urgently convene a meeting involving the Rent Control Department, university managements, hostel owners, student leaders and relevant regulatory institutions to address rising accommodation costs on university campuses.
According to the association, the meeting should focus on implementing practical, transparent and enforceable measures to protect students from exploitation and financial abuse.
GRASAG stressed that access to safe, decent and affordable accommodation is essential to academic success and called for immediate action to address the situation.
