Ghana Foreign Minister expresses confidence in SA President Ramaphosa following xenophobic violence
Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed confidence in South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s ability to manage recent xenophobic attacks targeting foreign nationals.
On May 11, Ablakwa described Ramaphosa’s open letter condemning the violence as "reassuring" and stated that Ghana relies on his leadership to restore order and maintain African solidarity.
Ablakwa emphasized that Ghana continues to value its bilateral relationship with South Africa, which is founded on mutual respect. He further reaffirmed his commitment to the Pan-African goal of continental unity.
President Ramaphosa had previously stated that the violent protests and criminal acts do not represent the views of the South African people or government policy.
He warned that lawlessness and vigilantism would not be tolerated and pledged to continue enforcing immigration and labor laws while upholding human rights and the rule of law.
