The Ghana Law Society has petitioned the General Legal Council over what it describes as professional misconduct by Alexander Afenyo-Markin and Awuah Agyei Baffour.

In a press release dated May 18, 2026, and signed by its General Secretary, Sam Atukwei Quaye ESQ, the society condemned the conduct of the two Members of Parliament (MPs), describing their actions as “shameful” and inconsistent with the standards expected of lawyers.

According to the statement, procedural law provides avenues for aggrieved parties to seek lawful redress through the courts, a principle the society said lawyers are expected to know and uphold.

The society also referenced the Legal Profession Act and the Legal Profession (Professional Conduct and Etiquette) Rules, 2020 (L.I. 2423), noting that the laws prescribe standards of professional conduct for lawyers.

“As officers of the Court, we must not act irresponsibly as to bring the independence of the Judiciary to disrepute or ridicule judges in a Court of Public Opinion thereby diminishing their relevance and independence,” portions of the statement said.

The GLS further described the actions of the two lawmakers as conduct that “smacks of indiscipline and professional misconduct that require punishment.”

It stated that a formal petition had been filed before the General Legal Council seeking appropriate sanctions against the two lawyers and legislators.

According to the society, the move is aimed at maintaining the integrity of the legal profession and restoring public confidence in the judicial system.

The statement was signed by Sam Atukwei Quaye ESQ, General Secretary of the Ghana Law Society.
