Ghana Maritime Authority commissions Safety Water Guards, launches life jacket initiative
The Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) has commissioned a new team of Safety Water Guards and launched the “Life Jacket for Safety and Livelihood Initiative” to improve safety on the country’s inland waterways.
As part of the initiative, about 250 life jackets will be distributed at key locations along rivers, lakes, and lagoons for commuters, fishermen, and boat operators.
Speaking at the launch, Minister for Transport Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the programme reflects the government’s commitment to making water transport safer.
“We want, on behalf of His Excellency the President, to officially commission the Safety Water Guards and launch the Life Jacket for Safety and Livelihood Initiative today,” he said.
The Minister explained that the initiative is aimed at protecting lives and promoting the responsible use of inland waterways.
“This intervention is not intended to inconvenience water users but rather to safeguard lives and promote responsible use of inland waterways,” he stated.
He described the programme as an important step toward improving safety standards and protecting the livelihoods of people who depend on water transport and fishing activities.
“This is how we want to protect lives, this is how we want to secure our livelihoods, and this is how we want Ghanaians to ensure that they respect all safety policies,” he added.
Mr. Nikpe also urged the public to comply with safety directives issued by the Ministry of Transport and the Ghana Maritime Authority, noting that adherence to regulations is essential to reducing accidents on inland waterways.
He said the government remains committed to introducing additional measures to improve water transport safety and support national development.
