Ghanaian Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel O. Ablakwa held a high-level meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy today, focusing on the release of two Ghanaian citizens currently held as prisoners of war.

The discussions centered on Ghana’s appeal on humanitarian grounds, as well as measures to safeguard the rights of its citizens under international law.

Minister Ablakwa described the talks as “fruitful” and expressed optimism about a positive outcome for the detained Ghanaians.

“Our bilateral discussions also explored strategies to combat human trafficking networks that exploit African youth, exposing them to the dangers of conflict zones,” Ablakwa noted.

The meeting went beyond humanitarian issues, with both sides agreeing to deepen collaboration in strategic sectors including agriculture, defence, education, and trade.

President Zelenskyy extended a formal invitation to Ghanaian President John Mahama as part of Ukraine’s effort to elevate diplomatic relations with Accra.

Minister Ablakwa conveyed the appreciation of President Mahama and the Government of Ghana to President Zelenskyy for ensuring the protection of Ghanaian citizens in accordance with international law.

He emphasised that “every Ghanaian life matters to the Mahama Administration.”

The engagement marks a significant step in strengthening ties between Ghana and Ukraine, reinforcing both countries’ commitment to citizen protection and bilateral cooperation.
