The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has strongly condemned recent incidents of violence recorded during ongoing inter-school sports competitions in parts of the Central Region.

At a crisis meeting held on Monday, February 23, 2026, the Director-General, together with his Management Team, engaged a delegation from the Central Regional Education Directorate to assess the situation and determine the way forward.

The Central Regional delegation was led by the Regional Director of Education, Dr Mrs Juliette Dufie Otami, and included the Agona West Municipal Director of Education, Mr Bismark Mfaafo Offei; Cape Coast Metro Director of Education, Mr Thomas Kwofie; Abura Asebu Kwamankesse District Director of Education, Madam Mary Cudjoe; and the Acting Director of Education for Awutu Senya District, Mr Frank Etrue Hayford.

Heads of affected schools — including Aggrey Memorial SHS, Adisadel College, Swedru School of Business, Obrachire SHTS and Kwanyako SHTS — were also present, alongside the Regional P.E./Sports Coordinator, Regional PRO, Zonal Sports Executives and Coordinators.

Some affected students and their parents attended the meeting.

The Technical Advisor to the Minister for Education, Prof George K.T. Oduro, was also in attendance.

Providing detailed eyewitness accounts, the Regional Director and her team outlined what transpired, identified the causes of the disturbances, highlighted immediate actions taken, and proposed additional measures to strengthen safety and security at future inter-school sporting events.

Professor Davis unequivocally denounced the acts of aggression, expressing deep concern over what he described as unacceptable conduct by some students.

He stressed that such behaviour undermines the core values of discipline, sportsmanship and mutual respect that school competitions are meant to promote.

He further underscored the significance of school games as vital platforms for discovering and nurturing sporting talent while fostering unity among institutions.

According to him, with football and traditional games becoming increasingly lucrative, students with passion and ability must be properly guided to build sustainable careers in sports.

The Director-General endorsed the decision by the Central Regional Director to suspend all sporting activities pending thorough investigations into the incidents.

GES Management also clarified that, contrary to reports circulating in sections of the media, no death was recorded.

The student who had been erroneously reported dead was present at the meeting.

Other affected students who had been hospitalised have since been discharged and are receiving medical care.

Management expressed relief that the alleged perpetrators have been arrested and are assisting the police with investigations.

In conclusion, Professor Davis stated firmly that any student found culpable of assault would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the laws of Ghana and the regulations of the Ghana Education Service.
