Ghana is set to commemorate 78 years since the historic 28th February Crossroads Shooting Incident, a defining moment in the country’s struggle for independence.

The annual remembrance honours the bravery and sacrifice of three ex-servicemen—Sergeant Adjetey, Corporal Attipoe, and Private Odartey Lamptey—who were shot while participating in a peaceful march on February 28, 1948.

The three veterans, who had served in the Gold Coast Regiment during World War II, were marching to present a petition to the colonial Governor at the Christiansborg Castle, seeking the payment of their benefits and improved conditions of service. They were stopped at the crossroads near the castle and fatally shot, an incident that ignited widespread unrest and intensified nationalist agitation.

The shooting became a catalyst for Ghana’s independence movement, galvanising political activism and accelerating the push toward self-governance.

As the nation observes the milestone under the theme “Honouring Courage. Renewing Hope,” citizens are being reminded of the enduring legacy of the fallen soldiers, whose sacrifice paved the way for Ghana’s eventual independence in 1957.

Commemorative activities are expected to take place at the Nationalism Park in Accra on Saturday, 28 February, where wreaths will be traditionally laid in memory of the three heroes.
