Ghanaian blogger raises alarm over unsafe bridge in Eastern Region, but MP assures works begin today
Ghanaian blogger Sharkoo has voiced serious concerns about the deteriorating state of a bridge in the Upper West Akim Constituency of the Eastern Region, describing the current situation as worse than in previous years.
Speaking in a phone interview on Accra 100.5 FM during the Ghana Yensom morning show hosted by Chief Jerry Forson, said the community’s condition has worsened following the government's promise of the bridge.
He explained that the old wooden bridge, which once served the town, was in better condition than the current arrangement. Since its removal, the area has become overgrown with bush, making crossings dangerous—particularly for children.
“In the past, when a child was crossing, adults could easily see and assist them,” Sharkoo said. “Now, the route that allowed visibility has been cleared, including a large tree that served as a footbridge for the entire community.”
The tree, he noted, acted as an alternative bridge for both young and elderly residents, enabling safe passage across the water. Its removal has forced locals to wade through the river without proper support, and Sharkoo revealed that a child has tragically died due to the unsafe conditions.
Sharkoo also highlighted the political context, noting that this is the first time the community voted heavily for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and most local leaders are members of the party.
He emphasised that residents are not demanding a large vehicular bridge but a simple footbridge to ensure safe pedestrian passage.
According to the blogger, the community does not hold President John Dramani Mahama directly responsible for the delay. Instead, they blame the official tasked with overseeing the project for disappointing the President by failing to complete the bridge.
Meanwhile, the MP for Upper West Akim Constituency, Mr Emmanuel Drah, who also spoke on the show, said the contract has been awarded to a contractor who is moving to the site today
