Gov't launches National Apprenticeship Programme pilot in Ahafo Ano South West to tackle youth unemployment
The government has officially launched the pilot phase of the National Apprenticeship Programme (NAP) in the Ahafo Ano South West District, aiming to equip the youth in the district with essential vocational skills to reduce unemployment.
This initiative is part of a broader national strategy to enhance technical and vocational education and create sustainable career pathways for young people.
The programme has commenced with 30 apprentices who are paired with six government-sponsored master craftspersons for practical training.
To support this, all registered beneficiaries and their trainers have been provided with the necessary tools and equipment for their respective trades, ensuring they have the practical resources needed to succeed from the beginning.
Patrick Opoku Fofie, Ashanti Regional Coordinator of the NAP, during the launch and distribution of the tools and equipment, explained the financial structure of the pilot, stating that beneficiaries will receive a monthly stipend.
Meanwhile, each craftsperson will be paid GHC3,000 for each apprentice they train.
He encouraged the youth to approach the opportunity with patience and a strong willingness to learn, as these qualities are crucial for mastering any professional trade.
For his part, Abubakar Sedik, Ahafo Ano South West District Chief Executive, emphasised that learning a trade is a powerful way for young people to secure their livelihoods and contribute to community development.
He urged the trainees to stay disciplined and focused, noting that the programme would be carefully monitored to ensure both trainers and apprentices remain on track towards achieving self-reliance.
Beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the government and the District Assembly for the opportunity, committing to stay dedicated to the training so they can eventually become master craftspersons themselves and train others in the future.
