Government moves to strengthen protection of state assets with new legislation
Government is taking steps to tighten safeguards around public property, with Cabinet directing the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, to prepare legislation aimed at regulating the management and disposal of state-owned assets.
President John Dramani Mahama announced the decision at the Ghana Civil Society Forum 2026, describing it as a key measure to enhance accountability and preserve national resources.
The proposed State Assets Protection Bill is expected to establish clear rules governing the disposal of public assets, including state lands, buildings, factories and other government-owned properties.
According to the President, the legislation will provide a legal framework to ensure that decisions concerning state assets are made transparently and in the national interest, while preventing arbitrary disposal by future administrations.
President Mahama said the initiative forms part of broader efforts to strengthen governance and protect public investments for future generations.
The President also disclosed that Cabinet has approved the National Ethics and Anti-Corruption Plan for 2026 to 2030.
The policy framework is expected to guide the country's anti-corruption agenda over the next five years by promoting integrity, accountability and transparency across public institutions.
President Mahama noted that the adoption of the plan underscores government's commitment to strengthening the fight against corruption and restoring public confidence in state institutions.
He expressed confidence that the twin initiatives would contribute to improved governance and reinforce mechanisms for protecting public resources.
