The Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate has condemned the alleged attack on a midwife at Tema Community 22 Polyclinic, describing the incident as a disturbing act of violence against a healthcare professional performing her official duties.

In a statement issued on Friday, June 5, the Directorate expressed concern over the incident, which gained public attention after a video purportedly showing the altercation circulated on social media.

According to the Directorate, the incident occurred when the midwife approached a visitor and informed the individual that the facility's visiting hours had ended, in line with established hospital regulations.

What began as an attempt to enforce the hospital's visitation policy reportedly escalated into a confrontation, during which the healthcare worker was allegedly assaulted by a relative of a patient.

The Regional Health Directorate described the incident as unacceptable and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting healthcare workers across health facilities in the region.

Officials stressed that the attack was unwarranted and occurred while the midwife was carrying out her professional responsibilities.

The Directorate further expressed solidarity with the affected staff member and reiterated its support for healthcare personnel who continue to provide essential services under challenging circumstances.

It emphasised that doctors, nurses, midwives and other health workers deserve a safe working environment free from threats, intimidation, abuse, or physical violence.

According to the statement, healthcare professionals must be able to perform their duties without fear for their safety, adding that acts of aggression against medical personnel undermine healthcare delivery and cannot be tolerated.

The Directorate has called for respect for hospital regulations and urged the public to support efforts aimed at maintaining order and safety within healthcare facilities.
