Interior Minister announces security reforms and tighter citizenship requirements
Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak has announced a series of security and citizenship reforms aimed at strengthening national security and protecting the integrity of Ghana’s institutions.
He made the announcement during a stakeholder engagement with religious and community leaders in Ho, as part of his official visit to the Volta Region.
Mr Muntaka said recruitment into the country’s security services is at its final stages, with successful applicants already being notified for medical examinations and specialised assessments.
He explained that the recruitment process is designed to ensure that only qualified and physically fit candidates are enlisted into the security services.
The minister said stricter screening measures have become necessary due to concerns about drug abuse and mental health issues among some applicants.
As part of wider security reforms, he also announced plans to expand surveillance and intelligence infrastructure across the country.
He disclosed that a Signal Bureau office established in Ho is expected to improve intelligence gathering, crime detection, and public safety in the Volta Region and beyond.
On citizenship, Mr Muntaka said government has introduced stricter requirements for foreigners seeking Ghanaian citizenship.
Under the revised policy, applicants will be required to show significant investment commitments to the Ghanaian economy before being considered.
He said the measures are intended to protect the integrity of Ghanaian citizenship while ensuring that prospective citizens contribute meaningfully to national development.
The Interior Minister also commended traditional and religious leaders, as well as security agencies, for their role in maintaining peace across the country, noting that the number of communities under curfew has reduced since January 2025 due to improved collaboration.
He called for continued cooperation among government officials, community leaders, and security agencies to support ongoing reforms and strengthen national security.
