Ghana, South Korea sign visa waiver deal for diplomatic and service passport holders
Ghana and the Republic of Korea have signed a landmark visa waiver agreement covering holders of diplomatic and service passports, marking a significant step forward in bilateral relations between the two countries.
The agreement, announced as part of deepening diplomatic cooperation, is expected to ease official travel between Accra and Seoul and strengthen institutional and government-to-government engagements.
The breakthrough follows President John Dramani Mahama’s visit to Korea in March, which officials say helped lay the groundwork for enhanced cooperation between the two nations.
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa played a key role in finalising the agreement, which was signed alongside Korea during a high-level diplomatic engagement.
Ghana also co-chaired the Korea–Africa Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in its capacity as Vice-Chair of the African Union, a development described as a symbolic moment for Ghana and the continent.
According to officials involved in the process, the visa waiver agreement represents the first of its kind between Ghana and Korea in nearly five decades of diplomatic relations.
The deal currently applies to diplomatic and service passport holders, with expectations that future negotiations could expand its scope to include ordinary passport holders.
Officials credited the success of the agreement to coordinated efforts between Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Seoul and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra, who worked together to advance negotiations and finalise the arrangement.
The Embassy of Ghana in Seoul was particularly acknowledged for its role in sustaining engagement with Korean counterparts, while officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were praised for their coordination and support throughout the process.
The agreement is being viewed as a milestone in Ghana–Korea relations, with expectations that it will enhance diplomatic efficiency, deepen cooperation, and open new avenues for economic and technical partnership between the two countries.
