Minority in Parliamnet has called on the Finance Minister to appear before Parliament to explain the circumstances surrounding the proposed 0.75 per cent charge on certain mobile money transactions.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, May 26, the Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin said it had sighted a statement from the Bank of Ghana indicating that transfers between bank accounts and mobile money wallets, as well as direct wallet-to-bank transactions, would attract the proposed charge from June 1.

According to the caucus, the development has raised concerns over how the policy was introduced and the process through which it is expected to be implemented.

The Minority argued that the matter requires urgent clarification from the Finance Ministry and relevant state institutions.

Mr. Afenyo-Markin questioned the role of the central bank and private sector entities in enforcing the proposed charges, insisting that any such policy should have undergone full parliamentary scrutiny during the national budget approval process.

The caucus is therefore demanding that the Finance Minister brief Parliament on Thursday on the rationale behind the proposed charges and the processes leading to the decision.

The Minority further stated that beyond the reported suspension of the directive, it wants full disclosure on how the policy was formulated.

The caucus also used the opportunity to criticise the governing National Democratic Congress, accusing the administration of policy inconsistency and failing to fulfil key promises made to Ghanaians.
