Independent aspirant leads clean-up as residents lament poor roads, water crisis in Kpone Katamanso
Independent parliamentary aspirant for Kpone Katamanso in the Greater Accra Region, Bishop Abraham Aidoo, has led a community cleanup campaign to address flooding and poor sanitation ahead of the rainy season.
Speaking at Zion Bridge, one of eight areas targeted in the exercise, Aidoo said blocked gutters and poor drainage leave parts of the constituency cut off for hours after rainfall.
“When it rains here, people wait up to three hours before water drains and they can move out,” he said.
The cleanup was aimed at clearing gutters and preventing flooding that affects market women, workers, and drivers.
Aidoo, who has lived in the constituency for nearly 19 years, listed poor roads, lack of potable water, and limited electricity as the area’s most urgent needs. He said many roads have deteriorated into gutters, while some communities like New Ashaley Botwe lack electricity entirely.
“Our major challenges are roads, water, and electricity. You cannot point to one good road here. For water, most boreholes produce salty or hard water that cannot be used,” he said.
He added that Kpone Katamanso, one of the largest constituencies in the Greater Accra Region, lacks a government senior high school and a general hospital. The Zenu market, he said, is overcrowded with no alternative markets in areas like New York and Zion.
Aidoo, who is contesting as an independent candidate, said he has been supporting residents through skills training for over 800 women in soap making, baking, and business management, as well as providing streetlights in some communities.
He called on government and President John Dramani Mahama to prioritize development in the constituency, saying residents have consistently voted for the NDC but seen little improvement.
“The constituency needs a change. It is not about political party.
I believe I have the vision and what it takes to help build Kpone Katamanso,” he said.
Aidoo said his campaign will focus on mobilizing residents to take action on issues they can address themselves while pushing for government intervention on bigger infrastructure needs.
