The National Peace Council has called for calm and restraint amid growing political tensions following the recent arrests of some political actors over comments alleged to have breached the laws of the country.

In a statement issued in Accra on May 20, 2026, the Council expressed concern over developments it said could threaten national cohesion and stability if not properly managed.

The Council reminded Ghanaians that the rule of law, due process, and respect for constitutional rights remain essential pillars of the country’s democracy, urging citizens and public actors to exercise moderation, tolerance, and responsibility in public discourse.

It further appealed to the country’s security and judicial institutions to carry out their duties with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism while ensuring that the rights and freedoms of citizens are protected at all times.

The Peace Council also cautioned political parties, communicators, and supporters against making inflammatory or unsubstantiated statements capable of inciting violence or deepening political divisions.

In addition, the Council urged political commentators both within and outside Ghana to be mindful of their public remarks and the potential impact on national peace and stability.

According to the Council, Ghana’s democratic stability depends on the ability of citizens and political actors to disagree without resorting to abusive language, provocation, or violence.

As part of efforts to ease tensions and prevent further escalation, the Council announced plans to convene a meeting with political party leaders in the coming days under its quarterly trust-building platform.

The dialogue, it said, will seek to promote understanding among the parties and explore lasting solutions to the current tensions.
