Secretary-General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has accused the 2028 presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, of being behind individuals who allegedly insult President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr. Koomson claimed that the government should not be overly worried about opposition criticism, insisting that the NPP is determined to employ all possible means to return to power.

His comments come in response to a statement issued by Dr. Bawumia on Wednesday, May 13, in which the former Vice President accused the government of undermining free speech and targeting members of the NPP.

Dr. Bawumia cited the arrest and detention of the Agona West Constituency Organiser, David Essandoh, as well as the remand of the party’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, as examples of political intimidation.

Reacting on Ahotor FM on Saturday, May 16, Mr. Koomson alleged that Dr. Bawumia is encouraging individuals such as Abronye and others who have publicly insulted President Mahama, suggesting that the former Vice President appears comfortable with such conduct.

He urged the NPP to focus on issue-based campaigning rather than insults and threats, cautioning against rhetoric about “dealing with people” if the party returns to power.

“They should rather pray to God because they are not returning to power,” he stated.

Mr. Koomson further alleged that elements within the opposition party should show restraint, claiming that a former Finance Minister of the NPP is currently “on the run” over what he described as serious offences.

He called on the party to demonstrate accountability by urging the said former minister to return and respond to any allegations against him.
