The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has held a stakeholder engagement with leaders and members of the 31st December Makola Market Women’s Association following recent protests by traders over conditions within the market.

The meeting, held on Thursday, provided an opportunity for market women to present their concerns, discuss challenges affecting trading activities, and explore practical solutions to improve conditions at the market.

The engagement follows demonstrations by some traders, with videos circulating on social media showing concerns over congestion, inadequate infrastructure, and operational difficulties within the busy commercial hub.

Addressing the traders, the Regional Minister reaffirmed the commitment of the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (GARCC) to improving the welfare of market women, describing them as vital contributors to the local economy and regional development.

“I hold our market women in the highest esteem; they are the undeniable backbone of our local economy and their peace of mind is paramount to regional stability,” the Minister stated.

As part of efforts to address overcrowding and infrastructure deficits, the Minister disclosed that government is advancing plans under the 24-Hour Economy Market initiative to develop additional ultra-modern market facilities to support expanded commercial activities and accommodate more traders.

According to the Minister, the initiative is expected to ease pressure on existing market spaces while improving the overall trading environment.

The Regional Minister further assured traders that steps are being taken to address specific structural and operational bottlenecks identified during the discussions, with the aim of providing long-term solutions and preventing future tensions within the market enclave.

Traders and stakeholders were also urged to remain calm and cooperate with authorities as the planned interventions are implemented.
