Gender Ministry intervenes in North Legon child abuse case as victim receives treatment
The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has intensified its response to the disturbing child abuse incident at North Legon involving a young boy who was allegedly tied to a motorbike and dragged along a tarred road by his father.
The Ministry said the follow-up action was carried out on the directive of the sector Minister, Dr Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, as part of efforts to ensure the protection, welfare and safety of children across the country.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry’s Public Affairs Unit, officials visited the victim at the University of Ghana Medical Centre, where medical personnel confirmed that the boy is responding positively to treatment.
However, doctors indicated that the child continues to suffer severe pain and remains traumatised following the incident.
As part of the Ministry’s intervention, officials also visited the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit of the Ghana Police Service at Madina, where they engaged officers investigating the case and were granted access to the suspect ahead of his court appearance.
The Ministry disclosed that preliminary assessments suggest the family may require additional psychosocial and social welfare support interventions to address the impact of the incident.
It further assured the public that it would continue collaborating with the police, health authorities, social welfare officers and child protection partners to ensure the victim receives the necessary medical care, protection and psychosocial support.
The Ministry also emphasized that broader social welfare interventions are being considered to support the family situation.
Condemning all forms of violence and abuse against children, the Ministry urged parents, guardians and caregivers to adopt positive and non-violent methods when disciplining children, particularly during moments of anger or frustration.
The statement also commended the swift intervention of the Ghana Police Service, health professionals and members of the public, noting that their timely actions played a crucial role in rescuing the child and ensuring he received urgent medical attention.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while legal processes relating to the matter continue.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights and best interests of children in line with Ghana’s laws and international child protection obligations.
