The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five of its personnel after they were captured in viral videos engaging in conduct the Service says damages its reputation.

The videos circulating on social media allegedly show the officers at an illegal mining site, where they are seen stopping suspected galamsey operators but reportedly demanding money instead of enforcing the law.

In a statement issued on Monday, May 4, by its Public Affairs Directorate, the Police said the affected officers have been removed from active duty and referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau for investigation.

“The Ghana Police Service has interdicted five (5) personnel sighted in viral videos engaging in acts that tend to put the name of the Service into disrepute,” the statement said.

The officers identified are Chief Inspector Matthew Blay, Chief Inspector Francis Arthur, Inspector Eric Osei of the Osu Police Station in Accra, Sergeant Amos Dery of the National Protection Unit, and Inspector Joseph Okyere Asabre of the Obuasi Police District.

The Service stressed that the matter is being handled in line with its internal disciplinary procedures and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and public trust as investigations continue.
