GTEC withdraws retirement, post-retirement directive after Education Minister’s order
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission has officially rescinded its earlier policy directive concerning retirement age and post-retirement appointments for senior academic staff in public universities.
The reversal follows instructions from the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, after consultations with the University Teachers Association of Ghana.
In a statement dated April 27, 2026, and signed by Deputy Director-General Prof. Augustine Ocloo on behalf of the Director-General, the Commission confirmed that the withdrawal affects the directive issued on October 1, 2025.
According to GTEC, the Minister directed the Commission to suspend the policy to allow room for broader stakeholder engagement and further discussions on the matter.
The Commission stated that the decision is intended to ensure consensus and safeguard institutional stability before any final policy position is adopted.
It further noted that fresh guidelines will be communicated after consultations with relevant stakeholders are concluded.
The withdrawn directive related to retirement and post-retirement contract arrangements for senior lecturers and other academic staff within public universities.
