GA/R: Tears flow as Ashaiman traders count losses after dawn demolition
Business operators along the Ashaiman Timber Market–Afienya Road have been left devastated following a dawn demolition exercise that destroyed several shops and structures.
The early morning operation caught many traders off guard, with some arriving at their workplaces only to find their stalls reduced to rubble and goods either damaged or buried under debris.
Affected business owners say they have suffered significant financial losses, with some claiming they were not given adequate notice before the exercise.
Others expressed frustration over the timing, describing it as abrupt and disruptive to their livelihoods.
Several traders were seen in tears as they attempted to salvage what remained of their goods, while others appealed to authorities for support to help them recover and rebuild.
Authorities are yet to provide detailed explanations for the demolition, but such exercises are often carried out as part of efforts to decongest roads, enforce planning regulations, or make way for infrastructure development.
The incident has sparked concern among residents and business operators, with calls for improved communication and humane approaches in the enforcement of such directives.
