Power instability and aquatic weeds disrupt water supply in Accra and Tema

News
Poor flow of water

Residents across the Accra and Tema regions are facing worsening water shortages as Ghana Water Limited (GWL) confirms significant disruptions to its production and distribution networks.

In a press statement, the utility provider identified persistent electricity instability as the primary driver of the crisis.

GWL emphasised that its entire operational chain — including treatment plants, pumping systems, and booster stations — is heavily dependent on a continuous power supply.

The company noted that current fluctuations in the national grid have severely hampered its ability to maintain consistent water volumes for the capital and its surroundings.

The situation is being further aggravated by environmental challenges at the Kpong water intake point.

GWL disclosed that heavy rains in the Akosombo area have triggered an unusually large influx of aquatic weeds.

This surge has led to the clogging of intake screens, creating physical restrictions on the amount of raw water that can be drawn for treatment.

To resolve the crisis, GWL stated that technical teams are working around the clock to clear the weeds and maintain equipment.

Additionally, the company is engaging in high-level talks with the Volta River Authority (VRA), GRIDCo, and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to stabilize power supply to its critical installations.

While these interventions are ongoing, the company warned that many communities will continue to experience intermittent or reduced water flow. Management urged consumers to bear with the situation as they work with energy stakeholders to restore normal distribution.
