Government investigates possible criminal involvement in Akosombo Dam fire
The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has confirmed that security agencies are investigating potential criminal activity following a fire at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Station.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, April 27, 2026, the minister revealed that while a technical committee is conducting an independent assessment of the fire's root cause, law enforcement agencies are running a parallel investigation into the criminal dimension of the incident.
When questioned about the possibility of arson, the minister stated that the government is not ruling out any leads.
The fire occurred on Thursday, April 23, at approximately 2:01 PM, affecting the Akosombo substation switchyard.
According to the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), the blaze necessitated emergency shutdowns and the isolation of sections of the national grid.
The incident impacted between 720 and 1,000 megawatts of transmission capacity, affecting a critical component of the country’s power infrastructure.
Dr Jinapor assured the public that the government is focused on restoring stable electricity as quickly as possible.
He noted that technical teams are working around the clock and indicated that engineers expect to restore normal supply within the week.
"I have been briefed that engineers seek to restore normalcy within this week," he added, emphasising the priority placed on stabilising the national grid following the disruption.
