No Ghanaians harmed in South Africa protests: High Commissioner
Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Anani Quarshie, has confirmed that all Ghanaian nationals are safe and unharmed despite ongoing protests in Pretoria and surrounding areas.
The demonstrations, organised by a group known as the “March Organisation” and led by Ms Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma, are currently centered at the Union Buildings, where protesters are calling for the removal of undocumented foreign nationals.
In an interview with Joy FM’s Midday News on Tuesday, Mr Quarshie revealed that the Ghanaian Mission acted swiftly upon receiving intelligence about the planned protests.
An urgent advisory was issued to Ghanaians living in the affected regions, particularly within Pretoria, instructing them to remain indoors and temporarily close their businesses as a precautionary measure to avoid potential confrontations.
The High Commissioner emphasised that these proactive steps, combined with a significant South African police presence, have successfully prevented any incidents of violence or vandalism against Ghanaian-owned properties.
He noted that law enforcement officers are actively monitoring the situation to ensure demonstrators adhere to approved routes while presenting their grievances to the authorities.
While the Mission continues to monitor developments across the country to determine if the advisory will remain in effect, Mr Quarshie reassured the public that the situation is currently under control.
He also disclosed that he is presently in East London resolving a separate consular matter involving Ghanaians, clarifying that the issue was unrelated to any xenophobic activity and has been successfully addressed.
The Ghanaian High Commission remains in close contact with South African local authorities and has pledged to provide further updates as necessary to ensure the continued safety and protection of its citizens during the period of public disturbance.
