NIA Management appeals for 2-week delay to avoid national strike
The National Identification Authority (NIA) has made an urgent appeal to its staff to suspend a planned indefinite strike, claiming that a resolution regarding improved conditions of service will be finalised within 14 days. The Strike Notice
The Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) formally declared its intent to begin industrial action on Monday, May 13, 2026.
The union’s decision stems from a nearly two-year delay in migrating staff to an improved salary structure, despite the Scheme of Service being approved in July 2024.
Bureaucratic Delays
Williams Ampomah Emmanuel Darlas, the NIA’s Head of Corporate Affairs, explained that the process — which began in December 2024 — has been delayed by extensive departmental scrutiny.
Speaking on Citi FM, Darlas confirmed that the necessary documentation has finally moved from the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to the Ministry of Finance.
Two-Week Breakthrough
Management’s request for a delay is based on a specific assurance from the Finance Minister.
Darlas stated that the documents are currently on the Minister’s desk awaiting executive approval.
"The Minister has given us the assurance that in two weeks, he will append his signature so that the Controller and Accountant-General can then commence implementation," Darlas noted, urging workers to hold off on the strike until that deadline passes.
Potential Impact
If the PSWU proceeds with the strike on May 13, it is expected to halt the registration and issuance of Ghana Cards nationwide. Such a disruption would significantly impact citizens who require the identification for various financial and administrative services.
While the staff remains frustrated by the gap between policy approval and implementation, NIA leadership maintains that they are actively coordinating with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department to ensure immediate salary adjustments once the final signature is obtained.
