GRDA clears eight months salary arrears for railway workers amid labour concerns

News
Chief Executive Officer of the GRDA, Frederick Appoh,

The Ghana Railway Development Authority says it has paid eight months of outstanding salaries owed to staff of the Ghana Railway Company Limited following mounting pressure from workers over prolonged salary delays.

The payment follows recent protests by the Railway Workers Union, which accused authorities of failing to pay workers for periods extending up to 14 months.

The workers had also expressed dissatisfaction over their conditions of service and alleged that GRCL staff were being excluded from operations linked to the Takoradi passenger rail service.

Responding to the concerns in an interview with the media, Chief Executive Officer of the GRDA, Frederick Appoh, assured workers that efforts are underway to resolve the remaining salary arrears.

According to him, government, through the Ministry of Transport and the Presidency, is working to settle the outstanding payments owed to railway staff.

Dr. Appoh also rejected claims that workers were unfairly sidelined from the Takoradi rail operations, explaining that the selection of 40 GRCL personnel was based purely on operational and technical needs to ensure efficient service delivery.

He further disclosed that the Authority has commenced revenue-generating operations on the Tema–Mpakadan railway line as part of efforts to support government in repaying the 400 million dollar loan secured for the rail project.
