President Mahama to lead special cabinet decision on constitutional review recommendations today
President John Dramani Mahama is expected to chair a special Cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 14, to deliberate on recommendations submitted by the Constitutional Review Committee as government prepares to outline its official position on the proposals.
The update was disclosed by government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who indicated that a draft position paper has already been prepared following consultations involving the Attorney General and the President’s legal advisers.
According to him, President Mahama had earlier instructed that the committee’s report be thoroughly examined to guide government’s response to the constitutional reform proposals.
Government spokesperson, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu said the review process has now been completed, paving the way for Cabinet to make a final determination on the recommendations.
He explained that Thursday’s meeting will focus primarily on the constitutional review report, although other national matters could also be discussed.
“The special Cabinet session chaired by the President will consider the draft position paper and determine government’s official stance on the proposals,” he noted.
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu further revealed that the approved position paper will subsequently be released to the public to ensure transparency and allow citizens to understand government’s decisions on the various recommendations.
He clarified that unlike reports produced by commissions of inquiry, the constitutional review process requires government to issue a position paper rather than a white paper.
According to him, once Cabinet adopts the document, the next phase will involve implementation measures, including the establishment of a committee to oversee the process.
He added that government will assess each proposal on its own merits, with some likely to be adopted fully, others revised, and some rejected depending on practicality and broader national considerations.
Government, he said, will continue engaging the public after Cabinet concludes its deliberations on the report
