The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has activated nationwide disease surveillance following a Hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship docked in Cape Verde.

As of May 7, the vessel reported eight suspected cases, five confirmed cases, and three deaths.

The crew and passengers represent several regions, including the US, Europe, and Asia.

While the WHO and CDC have assessed the global risk as low, the GHS has implemented precautionary measures because the virus — spread through contact with rodent waste or saliva — can cause severe respiratory issues and death.

No cases have been recorded in Ghana.

However, the GHS has enhanced screening at all ports of entry, increased monitoring of respiratory illnesses in health facilities, and strengthened laboratory response systems.

The public is advised to improve sanitation, secure food storage, and avoid contact with rodents.

Health officials recommend using masks and gloves when cleaning rodent-infested areas and urge anyone with a fever or breathing difficulties following international travel to seek medical care immediately.
