Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called for the arrest and prosecution of chiefs accused of allocating lands along waterways and other flood-prone zones for private development.

The traditional ruler made the remarks on Thursday, May 28, during a visit to communities affected by flooding following the spillage of the Weija Dam, which has displaced residents and submerged homes and businesses.

Addressing the media, the Ga Mantse blamed recurring floods in parts of Accra on the indiscriminate sale and development of lands originally reserved as waterways and green belts.

He insisted that traditional authorities found culpable must be held accountable for actions contributing to the flooding situation.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II also urged government agencies and local authorities to strictly enforce building regulations and environmental laws to prevent further encroachment on waterways.

According to him, although demolition exercises may be difficult for affected residents, enforcement remains necessary to safeguard lives and property.

He stressed that no one should be permitted to build in unauthorised areas, warning that failure to enforce the laws would continue to expose communities to deadly flood disasters.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) says evacuation efforts are ongoing to relocate affected residents to safer locations.
