NHIA suspends three pharmacies over suspected fraudulent NHIS claims

Fraud in NHIS claims

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has announced the temporary suspension of three pharmacies from participating in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) following the detection of alleged irregularities during a routine claims verification exercise.

The affected facilities are DELDEM PHARMA LIMITED, PARAMEDICA PHARMACY, and DESH CHEMIST.

According to a public notice issued by the NHIA on May 14, 2026, the suspension took immediate effect after investigations uncovered what the Authority described as “material irregularities” in claims and service transactions linked to the facilities.

The NHIA said the findings have raised reasonable suspicion of fraud and abuse under the NHIS Provider Service Agreement.

As part of the suspension, the affected pharmacies are barred from providing services or dispensing medicines under the NHIS until further notice.

The Authority also cautioned healthcare providers participating in the Scheme against engaging in fraudulent practices, warning that any provider found defrauding or attempting to defraud the NHIS commits an offence punishable by a fine, imprisonment of up to 10 years, or both upon conviction.

In the statement signed by the Chief Executive of the NHIA, Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe, the Authority reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and the prudent use of public funds in the delivery of accessible and quality healthcare services across the country.

The NHIA further indicated that it will continue to strengthen monitoring and verification systems to protect the integrity and sustainability of the National Health Insurance Scheme.
