Afenyo-Markin defends remarks against Circuit Court Judge amid GBA criticism

Minority Leader and lawyer, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has defended his criticism of a Circuit Court judge following backlash from the Ghana Bar Association.

In a Facebook post in which he tagged the association, Afenyo-Markin insisted that it was both ethical and constitutional to call out a judge whose conduct, in his view, showed “no respect for the law and the rights of citizens.”

According to the Effutu Member of Parliament (MP), there appears to be “a pattern” in the conduct of the Circuit Court 9 judge in political cases brought before the court.

“I cannot, in good conscience, respect a Judge who has no respect for the law,” he stated.

The Minority Leader further warned that the Minority Caucus in Parliament would not ignore what he described as the judge’s conduct, adding that a series of actions would be taken in Parliament alongside “appropriate constitutional steps” to rebuke the judge.

“Our law Lords are not above the law,” he wrote.

Afenyo-Markin also argued that questioning what he described as the excesses and pattern in the judge’s conduct should not be interpreted as a personal attack.

“Questioning the excesses of a Judge's pattern of conduct does not amount to an attack on his person,” he said.

He further called on the Chief Justice to monitor the conduct of the Circuit Court 9 judge and ensure that he upholds the standards of the judiciary.

“The Chief Justice must keep an eye on the Circuit Court 9 Judge and prevail upon him to uphold the ethos of his judicial robe and wig,” the Minority Leader added.
