The National Peace Council (NPC) has called on Ghanaians to uphold the rule of law and respect constitutional processes amid growing political tensions following the recent arrests of some political actors.

In a press release issued on May 20, 2026, the council expressed concern over the developments and stressed that due process, constitutional rights and the independence of state institutions must be protected at all times.

According to the council, the principles of the 1992 Constitution remain central to Ghana’s democracy and should guide the conduct of citizens, political actors and public institutions.

The NPC urged security and judicial institutions to carry out their duties with impartiality, professionalism and transparency while ensuring that the rights and freedoms of citizens are respected.

It also cautioned political parties, communicators and commentators against making inflammatory or unsubstantiated statements that could heighten tensions or undermine national stability.

The council further appealed to the public and the media to exercise restraint, tolerance and civility in public discourse.

The NPC noted that disagreements within the political space must be addressed within the framework of the law and without resorting to violence or abusive language.

As part of efforts to reduce tensions, the council said it will engage political party leaders in the coming days through its quarterly trust-building platform to discuss the matter and promote dialogue.
