The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has criticised recent comments made by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin against a Circuit Court judge, describing the remarks as inappropriate and unacceptable.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story programme on Monday, May 18, the Public Relations Officer of the GBA, Saviour Kudze, stated that the association would not support conduct by lawyers that undermines the judiciary or attacks judges publicly.

“We will never condone such conduct. Over the years, we have consistently cautioned and condemned similar behaviour by lawyers,” he said.

“I will not mince words in saying that what the Minority Leader, a senior lawyer at the Bar, has done is condemnable at every level. A senior lawyer who also holds a public position ought to have done better,” he added.

The comments follow criticisms by the Minority Leader over the continued remand of the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

At a press conference on Sunday, May 17, 2026, Mr Afenyo-Markin questioned the legal basis for the remand and argued that aspects of the process raised constitutional concerns relating to bail and freedom of expression.

He also criticised the presiding judge, stating, “That Circuit Court 9 judge, I have no respect for him. I pray he summons me for contempt. I will continue to disrespect him until he upholds the law. It’s a shame on the judiciary, he doesn’t talk law.”

Responding to the remarks, Saviour Kudze stressed that lawyers dissatisfied with court decisions should rely on legal processes such as appeals instead of attacking judges publicly.

“If you are dissatisfied, you appeal. You don’t go on air to attack the judge,” he said.

He also referred to previous incidents involving lawyers, including comments linked to Francis-Xavier Sosu in 2022, and noted that the GBA has consistently spoken against such conduct.

Meanwhile, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has criticised the GBA over what he described as selective silence on the matter.

According to him, the association has failed to condemn the Minority Leader’s remarks because it operates as an organisation aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
