The 2024 failed Presidential Candidate and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Mahamudu Bawumia, has accused the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of orchestrating what he described as a sustained assault on the rights and freedoms of opposition party members across the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Dr. Bawumia expressed concern over what he termed increasing attacks, arrests, detentions, and harsh bail conditions imposed on officers, activists, and supporters of the NPP since the NDC assumed office on January 7, 2025.

He cited the recent arrest and detention of social media commentator David Essandoh, who reportedly criticised the return of power outages, as well as the detention of the NPP Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the incidents represent attempts to intimidate political opponents and suppress freedom of expression in the country.

The former Vice President further alleged that there is an “unholy collaboration” between the Executive, state investigative bodies, and sections of the Judiciary aimed at silencing members of the opposition party.

He warned that public officials involved in what he described as abuses of state power would eventually be held accountable for their actions.

Dr. Bawumia also called on NPP supporters and sympathisers across the country to remain resolute and continue holding the government accountable to its promises despite what he characterised as intimidation tactics.

He stressed that Ghana’s democracy was built through collective struggle and should not be undermined by political persecution or abuse of power.
