The First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has assured traders at the 31st December Makola Market in the Cenral Business District of Accra that the planned demolition and redevelopment exercise will be handled with sensitivity and due consideration for their livelihoods.

Her intervention comes amid growing concerns from traders over plans by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to demolish parts of the market as part of a redevelopment project, without the immediate provision of alternative trading spaces.

The situation has sparked anxiety among traders, many of whom fear displacement and the potential loss of income at one of Accra’s busiest commercial hubs.

Some of the traders subsequently petitioned President John Dramani Mahama, appealing for government intervention to ensure that their livelihoods are protected during the redevelopment process.

Addressing the traders on behalf of the First Lady, Dr. Agnes Naa Momo Lartey conveyed assurances that government remains committed to ensuring a consultative and humane approach to the project.

According to her, discussions have already begun with the Mayor of Accra, with stakeholders expected to continue engagements to find a balanced solution that allows redevelopment without disrupting traders’ businesses.

She explained that while the traders are not opposed to the redevelopment, their main concern is the protection of their livelihoods during the transition period.

Dr. Naa Momo Lartey added that further consultations in the coming days would help build consensus on the way forward, stressing the need for calm and continued dialogue.

The 31st December Makola Market remains a key commercial centre in Accra, supporting thousands of traders whose daily activities contribute significantly to household incomes and the local economy.
