Greater Accra minister promises clearance of Kanda livestock market by saturday
Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Ocloo, has assured residents that livestock trading activities around the Kanda National Mosque will be brought to an end by Saturday, May 30, following growing concerns over sanitation and congestion in the area.
The assurance comes after the Public Accounts Committee (PAC
) raised issues about the impact of the temporary livestock market on cleanliness and urban management within the capital.
Speaking during an engagement with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) and the media, the Minister explained that the sale of livestock in the area increased ahead of the Eid al-Adha celebrations due to heightened demand.
According to her, authorities engaged community leaders and traders after concerns emerged over overcrowding, sanitation problems and disruptions within the enclave.
She noted that officials granted traders a short extension to allow them complete their business activities before the area is cleared.
“Honestly speaking we gave them up till Friday so hopefully we can assure you that by Saturday, the place will be cleared,” she stated.
Madam Ocloo further disclosed that discussions had been held with opinion leaders, who appealed for a temporary grace period for traders.
She added that the Municipal Chief Executive has been directed to identify a more suitable location for livestock trading during future festive periods to avoid a recurrence of the situation.
The Minister also revealed that she and her team are expected to inspect the area to ensure traders comply with the directive and that the area is restored to normal.
