President Mahama hints at new national airline in major infrastructure drive

President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that the government is planning to establish a new national airline as part of efforts to improve air connectivity and boost trade and economic ties between Ghana and other countries.

The President made the remarks on Monday, June 1, 2026, while addressing investors at the Ghana-UK Investment Summit in London.

The announcement forms part of the government’s broader economic transformation agenda, which places infrastructure development at its center.

Through the $10 billion five-year Big Push Infrastructure Program, the administration is accelerating investments in roads, railways, ports, housing, transport corridors, and aviation infrastructure.

“We’re expanding airport infrastructure and pursuing the establishment of a new national airline to improve connectivity and facilitate trade, tourism, and exports between Ghana and major international markets, including the United Kingdom,” President Mahama stated.

The President also highlighted ongoing work to modernize key transport corridors, including the Eastern and Western Corridors and the Accra-Kumasi Expressway.

Additionally, the government is modernizing ports and logistics systems to strengthen Ghana’s position as the preferred trade and investment gateway to Africa.

This latest revelation builds on earlier hints by the President about reviving Ghana’s flag in the skies.

The proposed national airline is expected to enhance international connectivity, support exporters, attract more tourists, and create new opportunities in the aviation sector.

The government views these interconnected investments; from roads and railways to airports and a new airline as critical steps toward transforming Ghana into a more competitive and integrated economy.
