Heavy rains leave parts of Accra flooded, disrupt traffic and daily activities
Persistent rainfall that started late Sunday night and continued into Monday morning has caused widespread flooding across parts of Accra, leaving several roads impassable and disrupting the movement of commuters.
The flooding affected the Monday morning rush hour as motorists battled waterlogged roads, resulting in long traffic queues across the capital. In some areas, drivers were forced to turn back after floodwaters engulfed sections of major roads.
Communities and roads affected by the flooding include sections of the N1 Highway, Apenkwa towards Tesano, the Accra–Kasoa Highway, Weija, Mallam, Achimota, Spintex, Atomic Junction in Madina, Kaneshie, Darkuman Junction and parts of the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, according to residents and commuters.
Several homes and businesses in flood-prone communities were also inundated, with occupants scrambling to salvage property and move valuables to safer locations as water levels rose.
Authorities are urging motorists to exercise caution and avoid driving through flooded roads, while residents living in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and relocate to safer grounds if conditions worsen.
The latest flooding once again highlights Accra's perennial drainage challenges. Inadequate drainage infrastructure, indiscriminate disposal of waste and rapid urban expansion continue to be identified as major factors contributing to flooding whenever the city experiences prolonged rainfall.
Emergency response agencies are expected to assess the extent of the damage as floodwaters begin to recede and additional reports emerge.
