The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has received a senior delegation from the New York City Police Department (NYPD) at the headquarters of the Ghana Police Service in Accra as part of efforts to strengthen cooperation between the two law enforcement agencies.

The delegation held high-level discussions with members of the Police Management Board (POMAB), focusing on operational collaboration, professional exchange programmes and the adoption of modern policing strategies.

During the meeting, both sides shared perspectives on the use of technology in law enforcement, including data-driven policing methods, digital investigative tools and integrated intelligence platforms used to support operational decision-making.

Issues relating to officer safety and welfare were also discussed, with emphasis on training, equipment and institutional support systems needed to protect officers while improving operational efficiency.

Another key area of discussion centred on accountability and transparency in democratic policing. The NYPD delegation shared experiences on internal oversight and building public trust, while the leadership of the Ghana Police Service outlined reforms and accountability mechanisms within Ghana’s policing framework.

The two institutions also reviewed plans for a proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in areas such as information sharing, training opportunities and joint efforts to combat transnational crime.

As part of the visit, the delegation engaged several operational units of the Ghana Police Service, including the Criminal Investigation Department, the INTERPOL Accra National Central Bureau and the Police Intelligence Directorate, where discussions focused on investigative collaboration and intelligence coordination.

The team also toured the Joint Operations Center at the police headquarters and received a briefing on Ghana’s integrated command and control system used to coordinate nationwide policing operations and incident response.

One of the outcomes of the engagement was the proposal for an officer exchange programme between the two institutions. Under the plan, a senior NYPD detective could be posted to the Ghana Police Service headquarters in Accra, while a senior Ghana Police Service officer may be embedded within the NYPD Intelligence Bureau in New York to strengthen operational collaboration.

Beyond the police engagements, the delegation also held courtesy meetings with the Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Bureau, Charles Alhassan Kipo.

The delegation further paid a courtesy call on the Chargé d’Affaires of the United States Embassy in Ghana, Rolf Olson.

Officials say the visit reflects growing cooperation between the Ghana Police Service and the New York City Police Department aimed at enhancing law enforcement collaboration and tackling emerging security threats.
