Interior Ministry declares March 6 as a public holiday
The Ministry for the Interior has reminded the general public that Friday, March 6, 2026, will be observed as a statutory public holiday nationwide in commemoration of Ghana’s Independence Day.
In a notice posted on its official Facebook page on Monday, March 2, the Ministry stated that the day should be recognised and observed as a public holiday across all regions in accordance with the country’s laws governing public holidays.
“The general public is hereby informed that Friday, March 6, marks Independence Day, which is a Statutory Public Holiday and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement said.
Independence Day marks Ghana’s attainment of self-rule from British colonial administration on March 6, 1957, making the country the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence.
The occasion is traditionally celebrated with national parades, ceremonial activities, and reflections on Ghana’s democratic journey, unity, and socio-economic development.
