Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu has emerged as the early frontrunner in the race for the party’s national chairmanship, according to the latest survey by Global InfoAnalytics.

The poll, published on Thursday, August 20, places Mr Boadu ahead of former Energy Minister, Boakye Agyarko, and former NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko.

Mr Boadu secured the support of 27% of respondents who identified a preferred candidate, compared with 15% for Mr Agyarko and 10% for Mr Afoko.

However, the survey also points to a highly unpredictable contest with 47% of respondents either yet to make a decision or unwilling to disclose their preferred candidate.

The sizeable pool of undecided voters is expected to become a key battleground as aspirants step up efforts to win support ahead of the party's national executive elections.

Beyond his lead in voter preference, Mr Boadu also emerged as the most positively rated among the three leading contenders.

The survey found that 61% of respondents held a favourable opinion of him while 12% expressed an unfavourable view, resulting in a net favourability score of 49%.

Mr Agyarko received a favourable rating of 50% against an unfavourable rating of 17% while Mr Afoko was viewed favourably by 50% of respondents with 18% expressing an unfavourable opinion.

A breakdown of the results across the regions also showed Mr Boadu enjoying a noticeable advantage in a number of areas.

He recorded 43% support in the Bono East Region, 38% in Greater Accra and the North East Regions, 29% in the Northern Region, 41% in the Upper East Region and 27% in the Central Region.

Mr Agyarko also posted competitive numbers in some of the regions, attracting 23% support in Bono East, 22% in Greater Accra and 21% in the Central Region.

While the findings give Mr Boadu an early edge in the race, the survey underscores the uncertainty surrounding the contest, particularly with almost half of those polled still without a declared preference.

The eventual direction of the race could therefore depend heavily on how the candidates succeed in appealing to undecided party supporters in the months ahead.

The NPP is preparing to elect a new crop of national executives later this year as the party reorganises its structures and positions itself for the 2028 general elections.
