Mahama calls for stronger democratic governance and greater citizen participation
President John Dramani Mahama has called for deeper democratic governance, stronger citizen participation and a development model built on Ghana's own capacities and institutions.
Speaking at the 4th Annual Convening of the Ghana Civil Society Forum, the president reflected on Ghana's democratic journey since the advent of the Fourth Republic, highlighting peaceful transfers of power, stronger democratic institutions, a vibrant media landscape and increased citizen engagement as achievements that must be protected and sustained.
President Mahama said the true measure of democracy extends beyond elections and should be assessed by whether citizens feel heard, institutions remain accountable, public policies respond to the needs of ordinary people and development reaches communities across the country.
The president also advocated a renewed approach to Africa's development agenda, stressing the need to prioritise domestic capacity, innovation, enterprise and national ownership in financing and driving development.
While acknowledging the support of development partners, he emphasised the importance of building a more resilient and self-sustaining development model.
According to President Mahama, this vision continues to guide his administration's reforms and programmes, including efforts to promote prudent economic management, strengthen domestic revenue mobilisation, diversify the economy, increase exports and attract strategic investment.
The president also commended civil society organisations for their contribution to Ghana's democratic development, describing them as important advocates for human rights, transparency, accountability and inclusive development.
He noted that many of Ghana's democratic gains had been achieved through the constructive engagement of civil society actors and reaffirmed the importance of continued collaboration in advancing national development.
