Merck Foundation honours First Lady Lordina Mahama for humanitarian impact
Merck Foundation has honoured Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, as its Ambassador in recognition of her decade-long humanitarian contributions through the Lordina Foundation.
The recognition was presented by Rasha Kelej and Frank Stangenberg-Haverkamp during the 2026 Merck Foundation Ghana Alumni Summit held at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra on Tuesday, May 19.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Rasha Kelej praised Mrs. Mahama for her humanitarian efforts, which she said have positively impacted thousands of vulnerable people across Ghana through education, healthcare support, and women’s empowerment initiatives.
According to the Merck Foundation CEO, the Lordina Foundation has partnered with the organisation over the years to provide medical training scholarships for Ghanaian doctors, helping to develop specialised healthcare professionals in the country.
She also commended the First Lady’s support for girls’ education through programmes such as the “More Than a Mother” campaign and the “Educating Linda” initiative, as well as her advocacy against child marriage.
Mrs. Mahama was further recognised for supporting the annual Merck Foundation Media Recognition Awards, which aim to empower journalists across Africa and Asia to raise awareness on issues including infertility stigma and women’s empowerment.
In her response, the First Lady expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the achievements of the partnership between the Lordina Foundation and the Merck Foundation.
She revealed that the collaboration has provided scholarships for 40 Ghanaian medical professionals, while more than 110 individuals have benefited from training in creative arts and information and communication technology.
“My heart is truly grateful as I listen to the testimonies of the Merck Foundation Alumni.
Their achievements offer hope that, with dedication, no one will be left behind,” Mrs. Mahama stated.
She reaffirmed her commitment to supporting initiatives that improve healthcare, education, and economic empowerment, particularly for women and vulnerable communities.
The First Lady also praised the Merck Foundation for its continued partnership and pledged to sustain the collaboration in efforts to improve lives and create opportunities for future generations.
