The Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Samuel Nartey George, has urged young girls to pursue careers in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), particularly in emerging fields such  as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering and data science.

Speaking at the opening of the 2026 Girls in ICT Day on September 7, Sam  George said the programme was designed to give young girls the skills, confidence and inspiration needed today participate meaningfully in Ghana’s growing digital economy.

He noted that women continue to be underrepresented in several technology-related fields, stressing the need to encourage more girls to consider careers in the sector.

“Technology, innovation and knowledge will shape the future of our nation. Yet we continue to remain underrepresented in fields like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, software engineering and data science,” he said.

“Through this initiative, we seek to give young girls the confidence, the knowledge and the inspiration to become the next generation of innovators, engineers, developers and digital leaders.” he added.

The Minister challenged the 100 outstanding girls participating in the programme to look beyond traditional career choices and see themselves as future leaders in Ghana’s technology sector.

“Do not let anyone convince you that technology will be reserved for other people. See yourself as Ghana’s and the world’s next great software developer, the next AI researcher of our country, the next cybersecurity expert of our country, the next Minister of Communications when you qualify,” he said.

Sam George further encouraged the girls to approach the programme with determination and make use of the opportunities available to them.

“I urge you all to believe in yourselves, be bold enough to dream, be disciplined enough to work hard, be courageous enough to embrace challenges, but most importantly, I urge you to use technology to solve problems and improve lives and make Ghana proud,” he emphasised.

The Girls in ICT Open Day brings together 100 outstanding girls from the Upper West and Volta Regions for mentorship sessions, coding and AI workshops, leadership development, career guidance and exposure to leading ICT institutions and technology companies..

The Minister said such initiatives are important to building a future where more young people, particularly girls, can participate and succeed in Ghana’s digital transformation.
