Minority in parliament urges government to disclose full ‘Big Push’ road contracts

The Minority in Parliament has demanded that the government make public all contracts awarded under its flagship road infrastructure initiative, the ‘Big Push’, stressing that such disclosure is vital for transparency and accountability.

The call comes in the wake of a report by The Fourth Estate that raised questions about the procurement process, including extensive reliance on sole-source contracts and the potential for inflated costs in awarding contracts.

Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, March 24, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, Ranking Member of the Roads and Transportation Committee and Member of Parliament for Akim Swedru, acknowledged the transformative potential of the Big Push, noting that if properly funded and efficiently executed, it could enhance connectivity and open up important economic corridors nationwide.

However, Mr. Nyarko said the recent report has generated public concern and urged the government to provide immediate clarification. He emphasized that publishing detailed contract information—including contractor identities, specific work scopes, and unit costs per kilometre, is crucial to rebuild public confidence and ensure that infrastructure projects are delivered with accountability.

“We strongly believe that the government must, as a matter of urgency, publish the full details of these contracts. This will give Ghanaians the opportunity to independently assess the policy and promote transparency in the execution of the programme,” he said
